LENARD LEON MASSEY

Lenard Leon Massey was born on June 30, 1955, in Harwood, Texas, to Lujus and Fannie Mae

Massey. Following his graduation from Gonzales High School, he moved to Prairie View, Texas,

where he attended Prairie View A&;M University. There, he dedicated himself to his studies and

proudly became the first in his family to earn a bachelor’s degree—a milestone that marked the

beginning of a lifetime defined by perseverance and achievement.

After earning his Bachelor’s Degree in Biology, Lenard began the first chapter of his teaching

career at Waelder ISD, later continuing his work in education with a position at Pearsall ISD in

1980. In 1982, he accepted a teaching role at Gary Job Corps Center in San Marcos, Texas.

This opportunity allowed him not only to continue shaping young minds, but also to maintain his

lifelong passion for agriculture. On weekends, he devoted himself to raising cattle and

cultivating small fruit and vegetable crops on the family farm in Harwood, Texas. During this

time Leonard attended worship services at Mt. Macedonia Baptist Church in Luling, Texas lead

by Rev. Johnny Richardson and Rev. Phillip Hardeman Sr.

In 2001, Lenard accepted a position at Seguin ISD to teach High School science. During this

time, he attended worship service Harvest Time Fellowship Ministry in San Antonio, Texas led by Pastor Alonzo Hurt. As the years progressed, Lenard felt a growing desire to spend more time

caring for the family farm and continuing the agricultural legacy handed down by his father. This

calling led him to the final chapter of his career at Gonzales ISD, where he continued to teach

high school science. His role in Gonzales provided the balance he sought—allowing him to

invest more time in the farm he cherished while worshiping locally at Mt. Pilgrim Missionary

Church in Gonzales, Texas, under the leadership of Pastor C.A. Roaches.

In 2021, Lenard retired earlier than he had planned due to medical complications. His academic

foundation in Biology was the guiding force behind nearly 35 years of dedicated teaching, during

which he inspired and educated thousands of students across South Texas. His passion for

science, steady patience, and genuine care for his students left a lasting and unmistakable

impact on every classroom he entered.

Though retirement came sooner than expected, it opened the door to a deeply meaningful new

chapter of his life. With more time at home, Lenard embraced the opportunity to pass down the

skills and wisdom his own father had taught him—raising cattle, growing hay, mending fences,

and target shooting—with his son and grandsons. These shared moments became some of the

most treasured experiences of his later years.

Whether seated behind a desk, driving a tractor across the pasture, or tending to his herd,

Lenard was known for the warm smile on his face and the stories he loved to share. His joy was

steady, his work was purposeful, and his presence brought comfort and laughter to those

around him. His legacy lives on in the lessons he taught, the land he cared for, and the family

and students whose lives he enriched.

Lenard is survived by his three children: Royce (Dominique) of Lubbock, TX, Frankie (Nakia) of Houston, TX, and Rebecca (DeBarron) of San Antonio, TX; six grandsons—Braylon, Kobe,

Isaiah, Sterling, Aiden, and Jason; and four brothers—Odell of Los Angeles, CA, William

(Barbara) of Lancaster, TX, Gerald (Charlotte) of Temple, TX, and Warren (Jennifer) of

Arkadelphia, AR. He is also fondly remembered by dear friends Dora Massey, Beverly Welch,

and Olivia Arellano, along with a large extended family of nieces, nephews, relatives, former

students, and friends whose lives he touched throughout the years.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Fannie Mae Massey; his father, Lujus Massey; his

son, Jason O.L. Massey; his daughter, Elizabeth Leha Massey, and his brother, Obria Lee Massey.
