LATOYA (SATBERRY) GAGE

LaToya Danielle Gage was born on May 20, 1982, to the late Rev. Dave B. Young Sr. and Derbie Allen in Corpus Christi, Texas, at Memorial Hospital. Coming in at 28 inches long, she came to make a mark on this world and currently holds the record for the longest baby in Nueces County. 

LaToya was known by many names to many people: LaToya, Toya, “T”, the Crimson Diva, Honey Bunny, Missionary, and Nanie. The name that stuck with her and held a special place in her heart was given to her by her father, “Say the Monkey,” at Friendship Baptist Church in Corpus Christi, TX. She would walk around saying, “I’m my daddy’s monkey.

LaToya was dedicated back to God by Pastor F.L. Fillmore, Sr. at the Friendship Baptist Church, with her Godparents being Pastor Raymond Mays Sr., and Sis. Katie Mays.”

LaToya accepted Christ as her personal Savior and was baptized at the age of 5 under the pastoral leadership of Pastor J.R. Miller at Friendship Baptist Church. She told Pastor Miller, “the water was cold…shocking my body but not my soul.” She served as a baby usher for 3 years. She later became a member at Greater Love Baptist Church in Austin, TX, under the pastoral leadership of the late Pastor Marlin Carter. She moved her membership to Mt. Pilgrim Baptist Church in Austin, TX, under the pastoral leadership of Pastor L.A. Yarbrough. She then joined Christian Temple in Smithville, TX, under the pastoral leadership of Pastor Exie Henry. As she followed love, LaToya moved to Chicago, IL, and upon returning back to Texas, she joined Greater Mount Zion Baptist Church under the pastoral leadership of Pastor Gaylon Clark, where she remained until now. 

LaToya attended Ray of Hope Private School for Pre-K and Kindergarten in Corpus Christi, TX until the family moved to Austin, TX, where she attended Elementary, Middle School, and graduated from Reagan High School as a part of the Class of 2000. She received a full academic scholarship to Paul Quinn College in Dallas, TX, where she pursued her major in Criminal Justice. Throughout her education, she was active in sports: Cheerleading, Track, Volleyball and Basketball that gained her another nickname of “The Terminator” for her demeanor and tall stature on the court. 

During her time at Paul Quinn College, she met the love of her life, even if she didn’t know it at the time, Ya’ree Gage. They were married on December 31, 2015, in Las Vegas, making every New Year’s Eve memorable. 

LaToya knew to make life memorable, so she took every chance to attend concerts, plays, comedy shows, movies, and if she could combine it with traveling and trying new foods, it was the perfect combination. She loved cruising with her husband, family, and friends. Music held a special place in her heart, especially Gospel music, with Cece Winans being one of her many favorites, along with Gerald Levert and Beyoncé. She spent her free time learning and growing into an outstanding seamstress and craftswoman, somehow when she touched a new project she created a new work of art whether it be shirts, cups, mums, and for her if she couldn’t find it on a clothing rack, online, she was going to make it herself and look amazing in it with the right hair and nails to match. She was proud of her two LLC’s: Threads by Jessie Lee in memory of her grandmother and Sparkling City Designs. LaToya was employed with ResCare of Austin from 2014 to 2023; her clients loved her and affectionately called her “Mrs. G.”

LaToya was preceded in death by her father, Rev. Dave B. Young Sr., both sets of grandparents: Walter Young Sr. and Jessie (Coleman), Elmore Allen Sr. and Minnie (Miles) Allen; sister LaSoya and brother David, mother-in-law, Ms. Queenie Warship, and a host of aunts, uncles, relatives, and friends.

LaToya is survived by her husband of 9 years and 10 months: Ya’ree Gage, her mother: Derbie Allen, stepmother: Delores Young, 2 brothers: AJ Satberry Jr. and Rev. Dave B. Young Jr., 3 sisters: LaJoya Satberry, Shawna Young and Dana (James) Chaney Young, and stepsisters: Naima Morris and Tamika Eason, 2 aunts: Ollie (Jesse) Richardson and Pamela Allen, and one uncle: Walter (Sharon) Young Jr., cousins, relatives and friends to cherish her memories. 

LaToya had no children, however she believed in “It Takes a Village to raise a Child” and she was the President of that village known as Nanie’s Babies; niece: Daysia Daniel, nephews: Takai Satberry, Aaron Young, Bryce Daniel and Caleb Daniel, godchildren: Carmen Marie LaQue’ and Raven SaMya Duran; Elise, Evelynn, Ellis and Erin Wright Jr. LaToya took a step further and supported her younger cousins with money, showing up for games, concerts and other functions that they were a part of. 

Special Friends and Families are: the Armsteads, Nelsons, Godparents: Pastor Raymond Mays and Katie Mays, Denice and Jennifer Hysaw, Serena Wright, Kendra McCullough, Cassandra Alexander, Tracie Morgan-Smith, Lakeisha Robinson, and LaKisha Alexander. A foster sister, Heather Schulz-Behrend.  She also leaves to cherish her memory a host of family and friends
